Electrorheological effects depending on the dispersity of lyophilic or lyophobic particles

چکیده
We theoretically investigate the relations among electrorheological (ER) effects of ER fluids, zero-field dispersity of colloidal particles and particle wettability, and find that well dispersed particles resulting from particle wettability have much stronger attraction than those aggregated into different clusters. We reveal that, to achieve ER effects, besides improving dielectric properties of ER particles, it is also helpful to reduce the surface tension of liquids, which leads to higher wettability of suspended particles and thus better zero-field dispersity of the particles due to lyophilic repulsive forces between them. Our theoretical results are applied to explain qualitatively the experiments by others. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Morphological wetting transitions at ring-shaped surface domains.
The wetting behavior of ring-shaped (or annular) surface domains is studied both experimentally and theoretically. The ring-shaped domains are lyophilic and embedded in a lyophobic substrate. Liquid droplets deposited on these domains can attain a variety of morphologies depending on the liquid volume and on the dimensions of the ringlike surface domains. In the experiments, the liquid volume i...

We theoretically investigate the shape of a nanodroplet on a lyophilic elliptical patch in lyophobic surroundings on a flat substrate. To compute the droplet equilibrium shape, we minimize its interfacial free energy using both Surface Evolver and Monte Carlo calculations, finding good agreement between the two methods. We observe different droplet shapes, which are controlled by the droplet vo...

We simulate the inversion process of a spherical micelle composed of symmetric diblock copolymers by means of dissipative particle dynamics. The evolution of micelle morphology reveals that the inversion is a two-staged process, in which a rapid agglomeration of outer lyophobic blocks occurs first, followed by a slow penetration of inner lyophilic blocks through the porous lyophobic layer. متن کاملEffect of mechanical abrasion in polar-molecular electrorheological fluids
Mechanical abrasion is a phenomenon which commonly occurs during the application of polarmolecular electrorheological (PMER) fluids. We experimentally investigate its effect by milling PMER particles for different times. We find that this effect can significantly reduce electrorheological effects of PMER fluids made of butyrolactone-modified TiO2 particles. This reduction results from the reduc...
متن کاملSaturated orientational polarization of polar molecules in giant electrorheological fluids.
Many researches on polar-molecular electrorheological (PMER) fluids with giant electrorheological effects were reported in recent years. The particles of PMER fluids (PMER particles) are known to have a dielectric core with high dielectric constant and a shell of polar molecules. Our calculation of local electric fields using the finite element approach shows that the local electric field can c...
